How to list a car on Facebook Marketplace (UK)

Updated By the DealerToolkit team7 min read

To list a car on Facebook Marketplace, open Marketplace, choose "Create new listing", then "Vehicle for sale". Pick "Car/van", add up to 20 photos, then fill in year, make, model, mileage, price, body style, colours, condition, fuel type, transmission and a description. Press Next, choose any groups to list in, and press Publish.

Listing a car, step by step

  1. Start a vehicle listing. Open Facebook Marketplace, choose "Create new listing", then "Vehicle for sale".
  2. Choose the vehicle type. Pick "Car/van" so the full vehicle form appears.
  3. Add photos. Add up to 20 photos, best exterior shot first, then interior, dashboard with mileage, wheels and any marks.
  4. Fill in the vehicle details. Enter year, make, model (with engine and trim), mileage and price, then choose body style, colours, condition, fuel type and transmission.
  5. Write the description. Cover the specification, history, MOT, features, any faults, what is included and who is selling. Dealers must say they are a business.
  6. Choose groups and publish. Press Next. On "List in more places", tick up to 20 groups you belong to, then press Publish.

DescriptionSpecification, history, MOT, features, what is included and who is selling.

Fill in every menu: buyers filter Marketplace by body style, fuel, gearbox, mileage and price, and a blank field can keep your car out of their results.

Photos that sell

  • Shoot in daylight against a plain background, with the car clean inside and out.
  • Order them: front three-quarter, side, rear, interior, dashboard showing the mileage, boot, wheels, then any marks.
  • Show faults honestly. It saves wasted viewings and builds trust.

What to write in the description

Lead with the engine, trim, mileage, MOT expiry, service history and number of owners. Then list the main features, any faults, what is included (warranty, finance, part exchange, delivery) and how to arrange a viewing. If you sell as a business, say so: since April 2025 it is a banned practice for a trader to pose as a private seller. Price the car against the live market, for example with DealerPricing, so it sells without leaving money on the table.

Selling safely

  • Meet at your home or business in daylight.
  • Check the buyer’s insurance covers them before a test drive, and go with them.
  • Keep the keys until the payment has cleared in your bank account. Do not accept cheques or overpayments.
  • Tell the DVLA about the new keeper once the car is sold.

Listing more than a few cars?

Every car goes through this same form, and Facebook has no bulk upload for UK vehicle listings. Dealers with a forecourt use DealerToolkit: it fills in every field and up to 20 photos from your stock feed, applies your description layout and ticks your groups, and you press Publish. Questions

Is it free to sell a car on Facebook Marketplace?

Yes. Facebook does not charge to list a vehicle on Marketplace in the UK, for private sellers or dealers. Paid options exist only if you choose to boost a listing or run adverts.

Can I list a car on Facebook Marketplace from my phone?

Yes. The Facebook app has the same "Vehicle for sale" form. A computer is quicker for listings with many photos, and tools that fill the form for you, such as DealerToolkit, run in Chrome on a computer.

Should I put the registration number in a Facebook Marketplace car listing?

You do not have to. Many sellers show it in a photo or give it on request, because serious buyers want it to check the MOT history on GOV.UK and run a history check. Dealers often include it to save time.

What should I write in a car listing description?

Start with the key facts: engine and trim, mileage, MOT expiry, service history and number of owners. Then list the main features, any faults, what is included (warranty, finance, part exchange, delivery) and who is selling. Dealers must make it clear they are a business.

How do I sell a car on Facebook Marketplace safely?

Meet at your home or business in daylight, check the buyer’s insurance before a test drive and go with them, and keep the keys until payment has cleared in your bank account. Do not accept cheques or overpayments, and tell the DVLA about the new keeper once the car is sold.
